Haven Healthcare: Tips for Staying Active as You Age
At Haven Healthcare, we offer a variety of services that cater to aging adults, including caregiving, home health care, physical therapy, hospice care, and inpatient rehab management. We know that aging is inevitable, but declining health is not. By eating healthy and staying active, you can maintain your mobility and strength, improve your ability to think and make decisions, and lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer. Now is the time to value your health and make the effort to preserve it. To get started, follow our tips for staying active.
Exercise can be a challenge as you age, especially if you’ve been inactive for a few months or years. Instead of jumping into a high-intensity workout, start slow and simple with a walk or some tai-chi. This advice applies to anyone, regardless of their age. Performing a strenuous workout after a period of inactivity increases the risk of injury and will also be incredibly discouraging. Take it easy at first and build into more difficult workouts.
Pick an Activity that You Enjoy
It’s much easier to stay active when you have an activity you enjoy. If exercise feels like a chore, you’ll quickly lose your motivation. At Haven Healthcare, we always recommend that you find an activity that sounds fun or rewarding. Perhaps you can join a group class at your local recreation center or pick up a sport, like tennis or golf. If you prefer solo activities, try swimming or biking. Explore your interests. You may be surprised where they take you.
Find a Partner
For some, exercise is much easier when it’s a social activity. To keep you motivated, ask a family member or friend to join you on walks, bike rides, or group exercise classes. A partner will not only help you stay committed, but having company will make things more fun and provide you with needed social contact.
Remember that Everything Counts
Whenever you are feeling discouraged, remember that any little bit of exercise helps you as you age. Even if you only walk for an hour or two a week, you are doing yourself a huge favor by improving your physical and mental health. At Haven Healthcare, we always remind our patients that any movement is better than none at all.
You should also keep in mind that staying active is about feeling better, not necessarily results. Though you may have a weight loss goal, don’t get too focused on the numbers on the scale. If you feel better on a daily basis, you exercise regimen is working.
