Determining if it’s Time for End of Life Care

July 1, 2018

Is it Time for End of Life Care?

End of life care, also known as hospice care, aims to make a patient’s remaining days, weeks, or months of life as comfortable as possible. Care usually involves nursing, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support for family members to improve the lives of everyone involved. Determining if it is time for hospice care is far from easy. Although you want the best for your loved one, it is also difficult to admit that you need assistance from an outside caregiver. If you are struggling to make a decision, look for the following signs.

#1. The Doctor Says There Are Less Than Six Months to Live

End of life care typically begins after a doctor’s recommendation. If the doctor determines that your loved one’s condition is not likely to improve or they have less than six months to live, you may wish to look into hospice care. During the remaining months of your loved one’s life, hospice care will make them comfortable and improve their quality of life. This will make this transition easier for both your loved one and your family.

#2. You Notice a Decrease in the Quality of Life

In addition to a doctor’s recommendation, you may notice that your loved one’s quality of life is slowly declining. As their condition worsens, they may have trouble sleeping and eating, and they may need assistance with personal grooming and other tasks. If you are currently your loved one’s primary caregiver, keeping up with these responsibilities can be incredibly overwhelming. End of life care can take the weight off your shoulders and improve your loved one’s quality of life.

#3. Your Loved One is in Pain

Pain is one of the main reasons to seek end of life care. If you are your loved one’s primary caregiver, managing their pain and keeping up with medication can become a full-time job. A hospice caregiver will make sure your loved one receives all their necessary medication at the right doses and right times. Your caregiver will do all they can to make sure your loved one is as comfortable as possible throughout this experience.
