What to Expect from Physical Rehabilitation

April 8, 2018

What Should You Expect from Physical Rehabilitation?

The phrase “physical rehabilitation” conjures a lot of different images in people’s minds. You may imagine patients struggling to overcome injuries or physical disabilities in a physical rehabilitation facility, pushing themselves through pain and dealing with a lot of physical and emotional turmoil. The reality can be very different.

While physical rehabilitation is certainly challenging, it’s not always an ordeal — especially with the help of skilled physical therapy staff. Haven Healthcare is dedicated to providing a supportive, understanding environment for all of our patients. Let’s look into what you can expect when you’re undergoing physical rehabilitation.

You’ll Have the Chance to Ask Questions

If you’re nervous about starting physical rehabilitation, the first thing to know is that you’ll get every opportunity to ask questions. When you or your loved one enters physical rehab, the therapist will be more than happy to answer any questions you have.

Physical therapy of any kind is about helping someone work comfortably through physical challenges. To do this, the patient needs to know they can trust their therapist. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

What to Wear

Physical therapy and rehabilitation sessions require the patient to be able to move comfortably and with ease — at least within the limits of their condition. Wearing any tight, stiff, or complicated clothing is a bad idea. Clothing for these sessions should be light, loose, and flexible.

Qualified Physical Therapists

When it comes to actually undergoing rehabilitation sessions, it’s important that the patient trusts their therapist and never be afraid to ask questions. This way you can be assured that your physical therapist is properly qualified to do their job.

Physical therapy and rehabilitation therapists are required to undergo training and specific education, giving them a detailed understanding of human anatomy. They’re also trained to compensate for the pain, related conditions, age, and general health of their patients.

How Long Do Sessions Last?

Typically, sessions will last anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes. However, this is something that will vary from patient to patient. Age, health, ability level, and the condition being treated will all impact the amount of time a session will take.

The Sliding Scale of Intensity

It’s also important to remember that the intensity of a rehabilitation session will vary based on these same factors. Especially when providing therapy for older patients who are suffering severe or chronic conditions, a physical therapist won’t push beyond the limits of what a patient feels comfortable with. Physical rehabilitation isn’t like a visit to the gym where pushing beyond limits is encouraged. The focus is on getting the body back to a state where it can function.
